NC bill would extend SOL for child abuse

Several Republican NC State legislators have introduced a bill to extend the statute of limitations for civil action for child sexual abuse.

House Bill 585 would allow a plaintiff until age 40 to file a civil action against a defendant for sexual abuse suffered while the plaintiff was under age 18. The current statute of limitations is age 21.

House Bill 585 had its first reading on Thursday, April 6, and was referred to House Standing Committee Judiciary IV. Among the bill's primary sponsors is Rep. Dennis Riddell, who also serves on the Judiciary IV committee.

The Catholic Church has been the biggest lobbyist in every other state that considered lengthening their comparable statutes of limitations.
